కోతులు - అరటిపళ్ళు

అనగా అనగా ఒకప్పుడు ఓ బోనులో ఓ ఐదు కోతులు, కొద్దిగా ఎత్తులో ఓ తాడుమీద ఒక అరటిపండు, దానికింద ఓ నిచ్చెన, అదెక్కితే అరటిపండు అందేలా.

ఇలా ఉండగా ఓరోజు ఓ కోతి ఆ అరటిపండు చూసింది, నెమ్మదిగా నిచ్చెన దగ్గరకొచ్చి ఎక్కబోయింది, అంతే, మిగిలిన నాలుగు కోతులమీద చల్లటి నీళ్ళు పడ్డాయి.దీంతో అరటిపండుకోసమెళ్ళిన కోతి వెనక్కొచ్చింది. ఇంకొంతసేపటికి, ఇంకొక కోతి ఇలాగే ప్రయత్నించింది, నిచ్చెనమీదకెళ్ళడానికి, మళ్ళీ చల్లటి నీళ్ళు మిగిలిన నాలుగు కోతులమీద పడ్డాయి, దాంతో ఈ కోతి కూదా మళ్ళీ వెనక్కొచ్చింది.

ఈ సారి మరో కోతి నిచ్చెనదగ్గరకెళ్ళడానికి ప్రయత్నించేసరికి, మిగిలిన నాలుగు కోతులు దాన్ని వెళ్ళకుండా అడ్డుకున్నాయి, మళ్ళీ చన్నీళ్ళు పడతాయేమోనని. ఈ పరిస్థితుల్లో, ఆ ఐదు కోతుల్లోనుండి ఓ కోతిని బయటకు తీసుకొచ్చి, ఇంకొక కొత్త కోతిని లోపలకి పంపించారు. ఈ కొత్తకోతి, అరటిపండుకోసం నిచ్చెనదగ్గరకు వెళ్లబోయింది కాని మిగిలిన పాతకోతులు నాలుగు దాన్ని కొట్టడం మొదలుపెట్టాయి, ఈ కొత్త కోతికి ఈ సంగతేమిటో అర్ధంకాలేదు కాని ఆ నిచ్చెనదగ్గరకు వెళ్ళడం మానుకుంది. ఇప్పుడు ఇంకొక పాతకోతి (పాత నాలిగింట్లో ఒకదాన్ని) ని బయటకు తీసుకొచ్చి ఇంకొక కొత్త కోతిని లోపలకు పంపించారు, ఈ కొత్త కోతి కూడా అరటి పండుకోసం నిచ్చెనదగ్గరకెళ్ళబోయింది. మళ్ళీ మిగిలిన నాలుగు కోతులు (ఇంతకుముందే వచ్చిన కొత్త కోతితో సహా) దాన్ని కొట్టడం మొదలుపెట్టాయి. దీంతో ఈ కొత్త కోతికికూడా నిచ్చెనదగ్గరకెళ్ళకూడదని అర్ధమయ్యింది. ఇలా ఒక్కొక్క పాతకోతిని (మొదటి ఐదుకోతులు) బయటకు తీసుకొచ్చి వాటి స్థానాల్లో కొత్తకోతులు లోపలకు ప్రవేశపెట్టపడ్డాయి. ఇలా ఓ కొత్త కోతొచ్చినప్పుడల్లా అరటి పండుకోసం ప్రయత్నించడం, మిగిలినవి దాన్ని కొట్టడంతో అవి ఆ పని విరమించుకోవడంతో, చివరికి పాత ఐదు కోతులు బయటకి వెళ్ళి వాటి స్థానాల్లో కొత్త కోతులొచ్చినప్పటికి, అవి అరటిపండుకోసం ప్రయత్నించడం మాని కూర్చున్నాయి.

సంగతేంటంటే, కొత్తగా వచ్చినకోతులకి ఆనిచ్చెదగ్గరకెళితే ఏమౌతుందో తెలియనప్పటికీ, ప్రయత్నిస్తే దెబ్బలుతింటామని మానేసాయి. ఇదొక ప్రవర్తన నియంత్రణ (బిహేవియరల్ కండిషనింగ్) కు ఉదాహరణ.

WHY "DARKEST INDIA?"

It is unnecessary for me to recapitulate the parallel drawn by General Booth between the sombre, impenetrable and never-ending forest, discovered by Stanley in the heart of Africa, and the more fearfully tangled mass of human corruption to be found in England. Neither the existence, nor the extent, of the latter have been called in question, and in reckoning the submerged at one tenth of the entire population it is generally admitted that their numbers have been understated rather than otherwise.

Supposing that a similar percentage be allowed for India, we are face to face with the awful fact that the "submerged tenth" consists of no less than twenty-six millions of human beings, who are in a state of destitution bordering upon absolute starvation! No less an authority than Sir William Hunter has estimated their numbers at fifty millions, and practically his testimony remains unimpeached.

Indeed I have heard it confidently stated by those who are in a good position to form a judgement, that at least one hundred millions of the population of India scarcely ever know from year's end to year's end what it is to have a satisfying meal, and that it is the rule and not the exception for them to retire to rest night after night hungry and faint for want of sufficient and suitable food.

I am not going, however to argue in favor of so enormous a percentage of destitution. I would rather believe, at any rate for the time being, that such an estimate is considerably exaggerated. Yet do what we will, it is impossible for any one who has lived in such close and constant contact with the poor, as we have been doing for the last eight or nine years, to blink the fact, that destitution of a most painful character exists, to a very serious extent, even when harvests are favorable and the country is not desolated by the scourge of famine.

Nor do I think that there would be much difficulty in proving that this submerged mass constitutes at least one-tenth of the entire population. No effort has hitherto been made to gauge their numbers, so that it is impossible to speak with accuracy, and the best that we can do is, to form the nearest feasible estimate from the various facts which lie to hand and which are universally admitted.

Let any one who is tempted to doubt the literal truth of what I say, or to think that the picture is overdrawn, but place himself at our disposal for a few days, or weeks, and we will undertake to show him, and that in districts which are as the very Paradise of India, thousands of cases of chronic destitution (especially at certain seasons in the year) such as ought to be sufficient to melt even a heart of stone!

CHAPTER I.



THE ESSENTIALS TO SUCCESS.

General Booth prefaces his scheme for the deliverance of the submerged by laying down briefly the essentials to success. I cannot do better than quote from his own words.

(1) "You must change the man, when it is his character and conduct which constitute the reasons for his failure in the battle of life. No change in circumstances, no revolution in social conditions, can possibly transform the nature of man. Some of the worst men and women in the world, whose names are chronicled by history with a shudder of horror, were whose who had all the advantages that wealth, education and station could confer, or ambition could obtain.

"The supreme test of any scheme for benefiting humanity lies in the answer to the question; what does it make of the individual? Does it quicken his conscience, does it soften his heart, does it enlighten his mind? Does it, in short, make a true man of him? Because only by such influences can he be enabled to lead a human life. You may clothe the drunkard, fill his purse with gold, establish him in a well furnished house, and in three, six, or twelve months, he will once more be on the "Embankment," haunted by delirium tremens, dirty, squalid and ragged.

(2) "The remedy, to be effectual, must change the circumstances, when they are the cause of his wretched condition, and lie beyond his control.

(3) "Any remedy worthy of consideration must be on a scale commensurate with the evil, which it proposes to deal with. It is no use trying to bale out the ocean with a pint pot. There must be no more philanthropic tinkering, as if this vast sea of human misery were contained in the limits of a garden pond.

(4) "Not only must the scheme be large enough, but it must be permanent. That is to say, it must not be merely spasmodic coping with the misery of to-day, but must go on dealing with the misery of to-morrow and the day after, so long as there is misery left in the world with which to grapple.

(5) "But while it must be permanent, it must also be immediately practicable, and capable of being brought into instant operation with beneficial results.

(6) "The indirect features of the scheme must not be such as to produce injury to the persons whom we seek to benefit. Mere charity for instance, while relieving the pinch of hunger, demoralises the recipient. It is no use conferring sixpenny worth of benefit on a man, if at the same time we do him a shillings worth of harm.

(7) "While assisting one class of the community, it must not seriously interfere with the interest of another.

"These are the conditions by which I ask you to test the scheme I am about to unfold. They are not of my making. They are the laws which govern the work of the philanthropic reformer just as the laws of gravitation, of wind and of weather govern the operation of the engineer. It is no use saying we could build a bridge across the Tay, if the wind did not blow. The engineer has to take into account the difficulties, and make them his starting point. The wind will blow, therefore the bridge must be made strong enough to resist it. So it is with the social difficulties, which confront us. If we act in harmony with these laws we shall triumph. But if we ignore them, they will overwhelm us with destruction, and cover us with disgrace."

ఆర్టీసీ బస్సులో ప్రయాణం ...

మీరెప్పుడైనా ఆర్టీసీ బస్సులో ప్రయాణం సురక్షితం, సుఖమయం, శుభప్రదం అని చూశారా/చదివారా?

 నేనీమద్య రోజూ చూస్తున్నాను, ఆఫీసుకెళ్ళే త్రోవలో ఎదో ఒక ఎపియస్ ఆర్టిసి బస్సు వెనకాల పడి.

ఆర్టిసి బస్సులో ప్రయాణం సురక్షితం అంటే సరే, 98% ఒప్పుకోవచ్చు, ఎందుకంటే ఈమద్య ఆర్టిసి బస్సుల ప్రమాదాల శాతం తక్కువగా ఉంటోంది కాబట్టి. సుఖమయం అంటే ఎంతవరకు ఒప్పుకోవచ్చో తెలీదు, కాని గరుడ బస్సులు వోల్వో వాళ్లవి కాబట్టి అదీ 60 శాతం ఒప్పుకోవచ్చు, అన్నీ వోల్వోలు కావుకదా :)

కానీ, ఆర్టీసి బస్సులో ప్రయాణం శుభప్రదమెందుకవుతుందో అర్ధం కాలేదు, మీకెవ్వరికైనా తెలిస్తే ... :)

Bourne Again, oh, no!!

In the last couple of weeks, I saw Bourne Legacy movie and could complete Bourne Imperative novel. BTW, before that I have read the covert one novel, The Altman Code, an interesting one.

If I have to summarize Bourne Imperative novel in one line, it is not a Robert Ludlum's novel. It missed the aura of Bourne that was created and maintained in all the three Ludlum's Bourne novels. Not a captivating / gripping one.

I haven't read the novel, Bourne Legacy but watched the movie, it's Ok but not a very interesting one either.

I will start The Paris Option now. I am also reading Think and Grow Rich ( though I am thinking for a while and have not grown rich, I think it should be Think Right and Grow Rich ;) ).

While studying I had heard a lot about Richard Bellman and studied Dynamic Programming but couldn't understand it that well. So, I have bought that book (stupid of me, having a book results in understanding it well? If so, by now I would have been a wise man and stopped buying any more books ;) ). If reading dumb novels takes that long a time, you can imagine how long it will take to complete this book, also, it's not about completing the book but understanding it may take much more longer or I may even find out that I will never be able to understand it fully :)

బెంగళూరులో వర్షం ... ఏమిటో ఈ విచిత్రం

ఓ మూణ్ణెళ్ళ తర్వాత మొన్న బెంగళూరులో ఓ మాదిరి వర్షం పడింది. దానితో పోలిస్తే ఇవాళ ఇంకా పెద్ద వర్షం పడుతోంది. ఈ మద్య వర్షాలు పడకపోవడంతో బెంగళూరుమీద బెంగ పట్టుకుంది, ఇక్కడ సాధారణంగా మే నెలనుండి మొదలై అక్టోబరు నవంబరు వరకు వర్షాలు పడతాయి. అలాంటిది ఈసారి ఇప్పటి వరకు వక్క పెద్ద వర్షమూ పడకపోయేసరికి బెంగళూరు కూడా ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ లాగ ఐపోతోందేమో, ఇక్కడకూడ అప్పుడప్పుడు వర్షాలు మిగిలినప్పుడు ఎండేనేమోనన్న బెంగ ఈవాళ వర్షంతో తీరింది. నాకు వర్షమంటే చాల ఇష్టం :)

Weekend movie fever

I was searching for L.A. Confidential for so long but couldn't watch it for a long time even after buying it. Finally the time has come and could watch it last weekend. Not a great story, we have similar bunch in our movies also but here characters are a bit (or entirely) different. I liked watching it after so many years.

Another movie over the weekend was Pulp Fiction, interesting one, I don't know what else to say. One interesting observation is that when the inherited golden watch could not be found, Bruce (missed his character name) makes a big fuss about it and goes for it to get it back and in that process he crashes his fiance's car that she likes very much but cold-shoulders her emotions about it :)

The Sixth Sense, a very nice one, the boy acted fantastic, of course Bruce as well. A child psychologist helping a boy suffering from hallucinations (or was it real ;)) even after his death is an interesting point. Of course the boy helps him understand he is a ghost :)

The usual suspects is another one, somehow nothing registered that well to say about it except the cripple's (is the one of the three guys in L.A. Confidential) action.

Finally, Takedown is an interesting movie on social engineering and hacking based on a real life story.

All in all I enjoyed an all out dedication to interesting movies over the last weekend :)

Another Ludlum's novel

Ok, with some free time of late, I could finish another Ludlum's novel, The Janson Directive. It's captivating except an air of extreme violence (torture) and unrealistic nature of some of the events (I know it is fiction but ;)). It also has some Indian named characters (briefly though) and some Tamizh sounding words (though I couldn't make out what they are)

An interesting quote from this novel:

"If your enemy has a good idea, steal it"

Another sentence that I liked:

" ... who never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity"

Now I bought a new novel, The Bourne Imperative, not an original one from Ludlum but written by Eric Van Lustbader. If I find this to be good then I will try other Bourne novels, Legacy, Betrayal, Sanction, Deception, Objective and Dominion.

శ్రీరామ నవమి శుభాకాంక్షలు

ఈరోజు మళ్లీ శ్రీ సీతారామ కల్యాణ మహోత్సవాన్ని (భద్రాచలం నుండి) దూరదర్శన్ ప్రత్యక్ష ప్రసారం ద్వారా చూడ్డం జరిగింది. ప్రతి సంవత్సరం చూడ్డం కుదరదు, ఆఫీసుకి సెలవు లేకపోతే. ఎప్పుడు అనుకునేదే కాకపోతే ఈసారి చాల ఎక్కువగా అనిపించిందేమంటే, ఈ టివి ప్రత్యక్ష ప్రాసారాలొచ్చి వ్యాఖ్యానాల క్వాలిటీ పడిపోయిందేమోనని. నా చిన్నప్పుడు మొదట్లో విజయవాడ ఆకాశవాణి వారు, ఆ తర్వాత భద్రాచలం ఆకాశవాణి వారు ప్రత్యక్ష ప్రాసారం చేసేవారు, ఇప్పుడు కూడా చేస్తూ ఉండొచ్చు. అప్పుడు అది వింటుంటే అదొకరకమైన ఎక్సైట్‌మెంట్ ఉండేది. దానికి కారణం అప్పటి వ్యాఖ్యాతలే. ప్రతి అంశాన్ని చాల వివరంగా చెప్పేవారు, వాటిగురించి వివరాలు కాని ఇప్పుడలా అనిపించట్లేదు :( (the same goes to Cricket commentary also, it was a thrill listening to Narottam Puri in those days, now the whole game became a farce anyways)

ఈ మధ్య నవలా పఠనం

 ఈ మధ్య రైలు ప్రయాణంలో క్రొత్తగా పరిచయమైన నవలా రచయితలు, David Baldacci (ఈ పేరు తెలుగులో ఎలా పలకాలో తెలియదు :(), లాస్ట్ మ్యాన్ స్టాండింగ్ (మొదటిది), మద్య మద్య కొద్దిగా బోరు కొట్టించినా మొత్తంమీద బాగుందనిపించి ఫస్ట్ ఫ్యామిలీ చదివా, ఇది కూడా అంతే, మద్య మద్యలో బాగ బోరు కొట్టిస్తాడీయన. తర్వాత ట్రూ బ్లూ, ఇది బెటరు. ఈ మద్యనే టోటల్ కంట్రోల్ మొదలు పెట్టాను. ఇప్పటిదాకా బాగుంది :)

ఈ నవలల ప్రభావంతో, ఈయన పుస్తకాలో కట్ట కొనుక్కొచ్చా. చదవడానికి సమయం దొరుకుతుందో లేదో చూడాలి :)

ఇంకొక రచయిత, Mark Sullivan. Rogue చదివాను. అంత గొప్పగా అనిపించలేదు. సో, నొ మోర్ బుక్స్ ఆఫ్ హిజ్ ;)
